I've read a few articles now about implementing dual currencies to avoid gaming, and to clearly separate a currency for paying users vs. free users. The benefits make total sense, and I feel like this is becoming the best practice for virtual currency execution.

But I'd really be interested to hear if anyone has experienced any major problems with dual currency systems that I should consider before I get too far into my facebook app development?

I was just wondering if virtual money will ever have a large impact in the real world. I know some can be converted into real money but you need lots of it. Is there ever going to be say a virtual market that has a good weight in the real world. I love that you can convert millions in virtual money into real but will that conversion every reflect real life money. I just dont think millions of fake dollars is worth say 1 buck.

http://virtualcurrencyexperts.com/questions/68/virtual-currency-as-cashVirtual currency as cashDonatus2010-01-05T13:40:52Z2010-01-05T13:40:52Z

How important is it that a virtual currency be able to take the form of cash? One of the most important features of real-world currency is that a dollar bill retains it's value no matter who holds it, and it can retain that value after being handed to another person.

Most virtual currencies do not have this quality. Almost all systems require that the payer and the receiver's identity is known either to each other or the system or both.

True cash does not have this limitation. As far as I know, the only system that attempted this was eCash in the late 1990s which failed. How important is it for a virtual currency to be able to be used as cash? The powers-that-be of course don't want to provide virtual currencies that have an anonymous quality of course, but consumers find it very useful with real currencies.

Will consumers ever accept a currency that doesn't work the way they want it too?

Is there a risk of a real currency like the US Dollar devaluing a virtual currency like WoW gold or Linden dollars in Second Life?

Maybe this has already happened before? It's interesting to think about if people in the virtual world would even notice before a developer started to fix the virtual currency problem.

With the introduction of virtual currency into many web-based transactions, including but not limited to, gaming, what type of tax responsibilities does virtual currency carry? In some systems, virtual currency can be redeemed for "real money" or "real products" which can be construed as income. Are there or will there be repercussions for dealing in virtual currency to avoid paying taxes and if virtual money is converted to actual cash will the same tax liabilities hold?
